Choose folders or approve your home folder, then set exclusions. brainBuild reads supported text, PDF and Word files within that scope and your operating system’s permissions.
Independent desktop app · In development
A living knowledge base built from the folders you approve. Keep useful context encrypted on your computer, let it grow with your files, and review useful evidence alongside its source.
Independent local knowledge. No Scribed account required. The offline summarizer, Hermes assistant and Markdown export shown here are preview features: tested in a signed preview build, not in the current download, brainBuild 0.1.6.
A source, not just an answer
“Bring the compact first-aid kit and one printed route map.”

Separate allowances
Illustrative budgets, not settings or measured usage. External model memory is managed by its runtime.
Permission belongs to each connection
Review app pairing in brainBuild. Revoke the connection at any time.
Illustrative interface with example content. Tabs change the illustration; nothing is installed, indexed or connected here.
A place for what you know
Bring documents into reach without reorganizing your folders. brainBuild keeps its own knowledge base and leaves the originals untouched. In the desktop preview, not the 0.1.6 download, a fixed offline model condenses approved local files. It has no tools or internet access; assistant activity cannot rewrite this source knowledge.
Choose folders or approve your home folder, then set exclusions. brainBuild reads supported text, PDF and Word files within that scope and your operating system’s permissions.
As approved files change, brainBuild updates an encrypted local knowledge base with bounded quotations and references back to the originals. Preview, not in 0.1.6: a fixed offline summarizer adds condensed notes checked against the original for identifiers, dates, numbers, negation and tense, and portable Markdown export keeps the knowledge usable elsewhere.
Pair compatible apps with models running on this computer. Review each connection and revoke it whenever you choose. Local file knowledge stays in brainBuild; explicit Markdown export lets you take a copy to another tool in the preview, not in 0.1.6.
Browse source overviews in the app. Reading the Markdown evidence files and saving a portable Markdown package for another tool are preview features, not in 0.1.6. Quotations retain their source and location; summaries and labels are not verified facts. Reads and exports check current source access. Export limits and incomplete coverage stay visible, and saved copies are yours to protect.
Two pools. Their own space to work.
Choose your scan interval, exclusions and processing allowance. Background maintenance and assigned work have separate CPU targets and memory budgets. You decide how much room to give each and how many assigned tasks can run at once.
Knowledge pool
Follow approved files, refresh condensed Markdown and organize source overviews at your chosen scan interval while the app is open and your computer is unlocked. Pause background work, adjust its budget, or let it pause on battery and under resource pressure.
Task pool
Connect an installed local model, approve a task’s sources and set its processing allowance. Get a research or document-analysis draft to review and explicitly save.
These are cooperative processing and admission budgets, not operating-system quotas. An external model runtime controls its own memory and GPU use. The built-in task adapter drafts text; it does not run commands, browse the internet or send messages.
Assistant preview
Work through a question with the integrated Hermes assistant, follow its activity and stop it when you need to. Keep reusable skills, personal preferences and scheduled tasks together in the desktop app.
Return to a chat, see which tools are being used and answer requests for clarification or permission as the assistant works. With your approval, it can create files and run local commands in a separate output folder.
Edit skills, review assistant memory and manage daily or weekly tasks that run while the app is open and your computer is unlocked. These settings belong to the assistant, separate from source indexing and knowledge maintenance.
Assistant conversations, learned preferences and generated work are not added to your source knowledge base. The original documents remain the evidence to check against.
The Hermes assistant and fixed offline summarizer are preview features, not in the published 0.1.6 download. They use the Qwen3.5 4B Q4 model on the Mac’s GPU in an isolated process without network access; setup imports and verifies an existing model file and downloads nothing. On the tested Apple Silicon Mac (M5 Pro, 48 GB), three multi-step requests in the signed preview build, a local test build that is not published, each finished in 17 to 57 seconds in the final test runs, including runs with extra background load, using about 6 GB of memory for the model. Each request has at most 90 seconds of model time; near that limit the assistant answers from what it has already found. Other Macs may be slower. Intel Macs and Windows are not supported by this preview.
Local AI for the apps you choose
Pair a compatible app to send prompts to a model running on this computer. Review each connection separately and revoke it when you choose. Search your files inside brainBuild: word search works without a model, and optional search by meaning uses a local model you install and approve. Taking an explicitly exported Markdown package to another tool is a preview feature, not in 0.1.6.
A compatible host uses brainBuild’s authenticated local API with an explicitly approved compute or speech connection. Pairing permits that connection’s supported operations; it does not grant access to Brain’s indexed files. Local research tasks stay inside the brainBuild app.
Compatible hosts connect separately. This illustration does not represent active connections.
Optional local AI for Scribed apps
brainBuild builds and searches knowledge from folders you approve on this computer. Local file knowledge and app files remain separate: Scribed Chat and Tel keep their own private file libraries.
Choose local AI in a compatible Scribed app, then review the pairing request in brainBuild. The app can send prompts to an installed model for a reply. This connection does not grant access to Brain’s indexed files or save the app’s prompts as Brain knowledge.
Keep brainBuild running and your computer unlocked when using local AI. Review or disconnect each app in Connections. Local folder indexing and search continue independently.
Explore the optional Scribed appsPrivacy and permissions
Folder access needs your approval. brainBuild respects operating-system permissions and excludes credential stores, hidden application data and cloud-only placeholders. Unsupported files stay visible in coverage; OCR is not included.
Knowledge is stored encrypted on your computer. In the desktop preview, not the 0.1.6 download, it holds condensed notes, bounded evidence and source references: original local files stay in place, full text is read when needed through a bounded memory-only cache, and full source text is not saved in the knowledge database or its backup. The operating system’s keychain protects encryption keys.
In the desktop preview, you can review and explicitly export a Markdown package for another tool. A recipient may retain or share that copy, so choose tools you trust and protect exported files. Disconnecting an app cannot retrieve copies you exported.
Development preview
The current Apple Silicon development preview is signed with the publisher’s Developer ID but not notarized, and exists only as a local test build. A signed public download is not offered on this page. Intel Macs and Windows are not supported by this preview.
Checks use generated fixtures, including packaged file extraction and permissioned retrieval. They are development evidence, not clean-machine release acceptance or an enterprise certification.
Signing, notarization, platform testing and clean installation checks must pass before a public installer is offered.
